Preparing Your Quilt For Quilting

We ask that you bring your quilt as a separate top and backing (and batting if you wish to provide your own. If not, we can provide batting at a nominal cost).  Your backing must be larger than your top. We prefer that the backing be at least 8 inches larger than the top.  In other words if your top measures 50"x 60" we will need your backing to be at least 58"x 68".  These measurements also apply to your batting if you are providing it.

Quilt Backing

  • Cut off any selvage edges before stitching the seam; use at least 1/2" seam allowance.

  • Trim the top and bottom edge of your backing so they are straight and square.  This will ensure the back loads on the quilting frame straight.

  • Press your backing. Don't forget to press the seam allowance open.

  • If you have a preference for which edge of your quilt backing will be the top edge, please mark this edge with a safety pin.

Quilt Top

  • Please ensure all seams are secure and threads are clipped.

  • Press your quilt top. Please make sure all seams are pressed down.

  • If you have a preference for which edge of your quilt top will be the top edge, please mark this edge with a safety pin.

Check to make sure there is minimal 'fullness' in the borders of your quilt top and is as square as possible.  In some cases if your quilt is not square or there is a lot of fullness, this may cause wrinkles, folds or waves when quilting.  A quick way to check if your top is fairly square is to fold it in quarters and see if the outside edges line up.  A way to check for fullness would be to lay your top flat on the floor.  If there is a wrinkle that you seem to chase around the edge and can't get it to lay flat then you have a fullness problem.

Please Note: Any fullness or puckers in a border cannot be quilted out.  Please make sure your quilt lays flat.
